Alchemists Phantasy

Performer shows several copper and silver coins. Placing a silver coin between two coppers, it changes into a copper coin. (a copper half dollar???). Then, mysteriously, the English Penny changes to silver. An easy trick to learn and it has a dramatic ending. The alchemists of old would be jealous!! The perfect close-up effect.

Alchemist's Phantasy

Most people love money, particularly illusions that involve money. They are one of the best types of close-up magic! Gold and silver are interesting, flashy, and attractive. What's more, many great magicians have specialized in slight of hand coin magic, making this sort of magic something that almost any audience can relate to. So--work on coin tricks, and you'll be in demand! But many coin tricks are difficult to perform smoothly, but here's a top quality gimmick that will allow you to mystify your audience with just a little practice.

Difficulty:  This trick is mostly 'self working' but requires a little practice to perform smoothly. Unlike coin magic using ungimmicked coins, these precision props will cut your minimum practice time to maybe 15 minutes, BUT the more you work on this the smoother and more confident you will be. Remember that your best friend is a mirror or video camera!

Basic presentation:  The beautiful and flashy coins (one of which is a half-dollar that you provide) can be made to change from silver to copper and (better yet) copper to silver! Hey--wait a minute! You can quit your day job! Anyway, for your final feat of legerdemain you can turn a silver coin into a gold coin in the spectator's hand!!.

Patter:  Coins that change state from one element to another open lots of patter possibilities, such as:

  1. Fairy Tale Story - A traveling tradesman who made pots and pans spent his life working with metal and often, as the evening became long at the pub, bragged that he was so skilled with metals that he could transform them into other metals. One day his stories reached the greedy King, who summoned him to the castle. The king insisted that he perform the transformation for him. He took the tradesman (protesting all the way) into a room full of silver coins. The tradesman reluctantly agreed to work his magic (under dire threats) and (as you will do as you speak) transformed the silver coins into copper! The tradesman explained that the conversion of the metals took place according to the purity of the owner's intentions. Well, needless to say that explanation only served to further anger the King, who threw the tradesman out on his ear. Conveniently, since the King didn't trifle with copper coins, a stream of copper coins followed the tradesman out the door! The poor tradesman didn't work all those years without understanding the value of money, so he carefully picked up the copper coins and tucked them into his duffle bag. He had a couple of silve coins he had earned in the bag, and curiously, the copper coins turned into silver as well! (which you will demonstrate as you speak) As he walked along, he came across a needy townsperson. He stopped to drop a handful of silver coins in his hand. When the townsperson opened his hand to look at the silver coins, they had turned to gold! (as your silver coin will in the spectator's hand)
  2. The mystical mind over matter approach--you could play this one for a bit of comedy by suggesting that your audience members can 'will' metal transformation by concentrated thought. You can chide a volunteer for making a poor value judgement in turning a silver coin to copper, and then recruit someone else to save the day and upgrade the coin to silver and then to gold.
  3. The Alchemist--The routine included with the trick goes into more detail, but of course the trick is designed with the alchemist in mind. Why breath all those molten lead fumes in a dank laboratory when you have figured out how to transform metals on a nice clean stage or at a dinner party??

Remember to find a story you like and practice it until you can be convincing.  The trick  is a top-quality prop, and will become part of your 'carry-around' magic reperetoire. Add a Scotch and Soda set or a Hopping Halves, and you'll be on your way to lots of self-working coin magic fun from FunStreetMagic!!
